National Hardware provided product for this project. Opinions are totally my own.
My hubby took a break from our big DIY kitchen remodel to install some new gate hardware from National Hardware on our two privacy fence gates, and today I’m sharing the easy tutorial. This might seem like a simple upgrade, but it will make our gates function so much better.
The latches that used to be on our fence were only accessible from the outside, so anytime you wanted to exit the gates you had to climb the 6′ fence. Seriously. It was so annoying, and I’m sure our neighbors have been confused witnessing this, ha.
Here are a few before photos of one of our gates. As you can see we only had a small latch on the outside of the gate.
Let’s start the step-by-step photo tutorial for this DIY gate hardware tutorial!
Gather your supplies and tools, and a two-year-old project manager if you have one. 🙂
Remove any old hardware, and using a pencil or pen, mark on the gate where you want to install the new hardware.
Using a your drill and a large drill bit, drill over the oval you traced onto the fence to create a hole that the thumb latch will go through from the other side. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Then using the screws included in the kit, screw in the inside latch mechanism.
Next, install the piece that the mechanism will clasp into on the post directly across from the installed mechanism.
Now it’s time to move to the other side of the gate. Line the handle up with the inside latch, and mark on the gate where you want the handle installed. Push the thumb lever through the hole you created at the beginning.
Using the screws provided, screw in the handle.
Step back and admire your attractive new gate latch!

We’ve talked about doing this to our garage doors. So simple, so much character.
I agree, Toni! I love the look! Thanks for entering.
And good luck!! 🙂
So cute! I think this would work perfectly on our new (to us ;P) garage doors! They’re already that older wooden-style white doors, so I think this kit would style perfectly with the carriage-style black light fixtures outside!
Also! I think your fence kit would be perfect for the new wooden privacy fence we’re about to put up! (Why are new-to-you houses so much work!) Let me know where you purchased it from!
Yes, Hanah! I love the carriage garage door look. I got the gate kit from National Hardware. If yo go to their website you can peruse the latch sets there. Thanks for entering and good luck!! 🙂
