Did you happen to see my $100 DIY office update awhile back?
Well, I got most of my new items at a thrift store, and with a little spray paint, made them much better. I LOVE thrift stores and get so excited when I find the perfect item for next to nothing! THE BEST!Today I’m showing you how I transformed a dated thrift store desk into a glam and modern office desk. Best part is that the desk was only $40, is super sturdy and the perfect size.
I forgot to take a good before photo of the desk (fail), but snapped this one after I already unscrewed the metal legs from the top. As you can see it was a fake wood laminate top and chrome legs. Not the worst thing ever, but not the light and airy look I was going for.
Big thanks to my assistant, Vivienne for helping me move the pumpkins all around the room. |
I took the legs to the basement and spray painted them a metallic gold. I love the leg detail and think they look much better gold, but I’m slightly gold obsessed. 🙂
I knew if I followed the exact (no sanding) method that we used for painting our kitchen cabinets, I could paint the laminate top a crisp white, no problem. I did one coat of primer two coats of paint and am very happy with the results. It’s holding up quite nicely as well.

And here’s a shot of the final product.
I love this desk so much, and am so proud of my thrift store update!
Have you upcycled a thrift store desk lately? I love seeing the before and afters, so please share your photos with me. 🙂

I follow your blog and just bought chairs with a chrome base that I'd like to spray paint gold. Did you you sand the chrome first (mine are peeling a bit). Also what type of gold spray paint did you use? Thank you!!!
Hi Rbon. I didn't sand at all, just wiped the legs down first. I think I used regular metallic gold spray paint…nothing special. I did 2 coats. Good luck and thanks for following my blog!! 🙂
