DIY Sunburst Art – Two Modern Styles

DIY sunburst art tutorial — The most unique mid-century modern style home decor!

I’ve had a thing for sunburst art in our home for more nearly 2 decades (see a couple of my favorites below).

So I decided it was time to finally make my own in two different styles!

Supplies needed:

• Style 1 – Wood skewers
• Style 2 – Gold paper straws
Mason jar style lids, candle lids, etc.
Liquid gold leaf (optional)
Metallic gold spray paint
Hot glue gun and glue
Compact mirror (optional)
Scissors
Wire cutters
• Scrap cardboard
Floral foam (for easier wood skewer spray painting)

DIY sunburst art – style 1

Start with your Wood skewers, some cardboard, got glue gun, and wire cutters.

I love a gold look, so before I got started I spray painted my skewers using a floral foam base for stability and allowed to dry for an hour.

You can see the difference between natural versus spray painted skewers here.

Upcycle idea: I gently removed the mirror from an old makeup compact and found a used mason jar lid top to use as well. I always love shopping my home before purchasing any supplies.

Back to the skewers!

I planned on using (8) of the 10″ skewers for my longest pieces, and knew I’d need to trim the others down with my wire cutters (scissors also work). Next I cut (8) more to 8″, followed by (16) more at 6″.

First I made sure the cardboard circle that the skewers would be glued to was smaller than the mason jar lid. Then I started laying them out dry to get an idea of placement and skewer sizing.

Once I as happy with my dry skewer layout it was time to start hot gluing my pieces. I simply glued the skewers on until I made my way around the circle.

I then grabbed my mason jar lid and hot glued to cover the glued skewers.

I could have stopped here, but decided to add that free compact mirror to the center using more hot glue.

Finally I stepped back to admire my first DIY sunburst art. I love how it turned out!

Start with your gold paper straws, hot glue gun, mason jar lid ring, scissors, and a ruler.

Decide how many straws you’ll need and what size they all need to be. I went with (8) full size, (8) 2″ shorter, and (16) 2″ shorter – exactly the same as my first sunburst.

Then I did my dry fit before committing to hot glue.

Instead of a lid ring like I used above, you could also use a standard mason jar lid, a metallic candle lid, you name it. And there is always the option to add a compact sized mirror too!

I like thm all, but liked the simplicity of the one with a hollow center.

It was time to start hot gluing the straws to create my sunburst.

This part moves pretty quickly once you get started. Using straws underneath the drying straws for support worked really well. This helped keep them all level and straight.

My lid had a silver tone to it, and I prefer gold, so I decided to use my trusty liquid gold leaf to paint it gold.

Once the gilding dried I gently pulled away the excess hot glue strands.

I absolutely love how this DIY sunburst turned out – the straws worked really well too!
