DIY // FUN + UNIQUE SAVE THE DATE

Recently Amanda, a July 2012 bride contacted me to design her save the dates. She wanted something really unique and shared some inspiration for a film canister save the date idea. I immediately got to work.

It was a fairly simple project (after that pesky math part was out of the way). Here is what you will need if you want to accomplish this project yourself:

+ Legal size paper – I used graytex brand inkjet and laser glossy paper (32 lb. coated).
You can order here

+ Scotch tape

+ Empty black metal film cassettes. You can order them here or here.

+ Labels – I used Avery Labels (Labels for Laser Printers 5160, 1″ x 2-5/8″). You can order here

+ Scissors

+ Laser or Inkjet printer

+ Design Software – I used Illustrator

+ Template – I created my own. You can download it here

I designed the paper “film” to my clients liking, and then printed them out 4 up on a legal size sheet (I printed 43 sheets to get a quantity of 170 film strips)

Once they were printed I took scissors and hand cut all 170 strips. This took about 4 hours –  I prefer to power through projects like this, but you can break it out over a week or two if you want it to be easier.

I also designed custom stickers with the Avery labels that were placed on the outside of the canisters.

I gave all of these components to Amanda and she and her family handled the rest of the process. They took the canisters apart until they were holding the inner canister “spool” in their hands. Hold the end of the film strip (with the extra few inches of white space at the end film strips and take a strip of scotch tape (about .5″ worth) and tape it to the spool. the you simply tightly roll the rest of the film strip paper until it is all wrapped around the spool.

Slide that into the canister cassette with the tip/pull area sticking out of the canister slit.

Voilà…you have your very own custom film canister save the date.

Here are the results…not too shabby if I do say so myself:

  1. Hi, I am thinking about using this idea for my save the dates and I was wondering how you shipped them. They're too tiny for an actual postage box, but almost too big for a standard envelope. Any help would be great.
    Thank you,
    DJ
