DIY SEAT CUSHION RE-COVER

Yesterday I decided to use my remaining shower curtain fabric to recover the cushions on some extra vintage dining room chairs that were given to us a few years back. They have been hiding in our basement needing some love.

I grabbed some items and got to work.

1. The shower curtain fabric
2. Scissors
3. Staple gun
4. A screwdriver
5. The chairs

The before:

First I used the screwdriver to remove the seat from the chair, then I laid my fabric out on the floor underneath the seat cutting the fabric to the shape of the chair (ensuring that I left at least 4″ of extra fabric all around).

Then pulling very tightly, I covered the seat as you would do wrapping gift. As you hold the fabric tightly in place you will want to staple it to the seat starting with a corner. I stapled around the edges about every 2″ until I made it all the way around the seat.

You should use extra staples in the corners where the fabric folds/overlaps. You can use your scissors to cut any excess fabric above the staple line if you wish.

If you see any areas that look a little lumpy or not as tight as you’d like simply pull on the area and add a couple more staples to the backside until you are happy with the look (you can even remove a staple or two and re-staple as needed). Finally you will need to screw the seat back onto the chair and you will have a little something like this:DIY // UPCYCLE MARCH: 2 DIY SHOWER CURTAIN PROJECTS, Oh So Lovely Blog

Not too shabby if I can say so myself! A much needed update.I liked the results so much that I decided to recover a few more chairs with the remaining aqua fabric as well as some of my remaining sunburst fabric (that I used on the curtains awhile back).

P.S.I have used shower curtains in a few of projects around my home over the years:
-Made some easy guest room window curtains (before this blog was born)
-Recovered an old rocking chair that sits on our front porch
-Made dining room curtains (pictured in this photo)
