Looking to add a fun pop of handmade color to your home? May I suggest a DIY pom pom wall hanging or two?
Once you get started it’s easy to knock out a few of these guys, promise.
Let’s get started on this fun and easy DIY pom pom wall hanging tutorial!
Gather your supplies:
- Dowel rods
- Thick string
- Needle
- Yarn in varying colors
- Pom pom tool (I used a large and small one)
- Sharp scissors
- Pre-made pom poms (if you wish)
If you’re not the pom pom making type—good news—you can buy pre-made poms at most craft stores.
While I was as Michaels I found some colorful ombre style yarn on clearance and each one came with a pom pom on top. Score!
Let’s start off by making all of our pom poms using your tool. Pull both sides open like this.
Take your yarn and start wrapping on one side until the tool is completely covered.
The more yarn you use, the thicker your pom will be. Trim off your excess yarn and fold the tool side back in.
Repeat the exact same steps on the other side of your tool.
Trim your string and close the other tool section.
Flip your tool on its side and using your scissors, cut your yarn.
Repeat the same steps on the other side.
Once your yarn is cut, take a long piece of thread and wrap it around the pom pom maker and double knot to secure both sides of yard together.
Make sure you pull tight and double knot.
Pull the levers of each side of the tool away from center.
Then simply pull your tool apart into two pieces and remove your pom pom.
Take your scissors and trim off any excess yarn to make even all around the pom.
Once you’re happy with the pom, repeat these steps 5-6 (or more) times with both sized tools (if you have both sizes).
Lay out all of your poms and anything else you want to add to your DIY wall hanging to get a visual on how everything might look together.
Once you’re happy, thread the thicker string through your needle.
Start at the bottom of one section of pom poms and string the string through all of the pieces.
The thicker string works well and keeps the poms from sliding off. Once you have one full section strung up, pull your needle from the string and repeat the same step on all strands.
Once all sides are strung up, it’s time to tie your string to the dowel rod. Make sure you double knot for extra security.
Repeat for all strands, then take one long strand and tie to the outside strand’s string.
Cut off excess string.
That’s it—you’re done. Simply hang and enjoy your DIY pom pom wall hanging!
You can also leave two extra long pieces of string at the top of the outer sections instead of tying on a new string.

This one I got lucky and found a pre-made banner in the Target Dollar Spot.
I simply removed all pieces and rebuilt using the same steps as above.
Wanna learn how to make a DIY tassel? It’s really easy. Here are the quick steps.
Take a piece of cardboard and wrap your yarn around it 20-30 times.
Firmly tie on one strand of yarn if you wish to have a hanger at the top of your tassel.
Trim one side to create the hanging yard part of the tassel.
Lay flat and firmly tie one more piece of yard at the top to get the top section of the tassel.
Double knot it.
Then trim the ends to make even.
And you have your own little tassel. To make a larger one, you’ll just need a larger piece of cardboard.
Back to my second wall hanging…
Lay out all of your pieces to your liking.
And thread your string and needle through all three sections.
And this time you’ll want to leave a lot of excess string at the top of the outer two sections. This excess string will be used for hanging.
Tie all sections to the dowel rod and you have another DIY wall hanging!
This one was extra easy since the parts were pre-made, but as you saw in my first wall hanging, the pieces are pretty easy to make yourself.
